Winter Scenes

Below is a prototypical northern Minnesota woodland scene.  when I look at It, I think of Preacher’s Grove in Itasca State Park. This image won a Courage Cards competition and is available in its catalog for the 2019-20 holidays, or by contacting me.

Three Island Park in Winter
Oil on canvas. 16″ x 20″, $175                                                                              While cross-country skiing through Three Island Park outside Bemidji MN, I came across these dead branches stretching their arms across indigo ice. The second image is of the wake behind our pontoon as the sun sets west of Stump Lake, a widening of the Mississippi east of Bemidji.

Minnesota’s recent winters were some of the longest and snowiest in my memory. Everyday I was presented with the lovely lavender and cobalt blue shadows, and I wanted to convey some of that wintry feeling in paint. And what better subject than Lake Superior in winter–especially, since I lived for two years looking down on its waves from Duluth’s Eastside.

Emrick Polson Farmhouse, Wabasha Co. MN
Oil on canvas, 24″ x 30″, $500                                                                                  Seen at dusk, the farm home built by my great-grandfather, Emrick Polson, in rural Wabasha County, looks afire. It was the successor to a log cabin and built in the traditional L-shape of older farmhomes, wherein the front door section was erected first. When there was more money, a second section was attached perpendicularly. The third image is a close-up of the porch on his grandson’s, William Polson’s, Wabasha Co. farmhouse.

A storm approaches the fallow fields in southern Minnesota in fall. For me. the work conveys the solitude of the rural landscape and the beauty and power of the coming storm.
